As a local tour guide, I recently organized a day trip to Zermatt to fulfill my friend Andreas’s dream of climbing the Matterhorn.
Our journey was relaxed, using a day ticket via Bern and Spiez through the beautiful Bernese Oberland to Brig. We had enriching international encounters on the train and enjoyed a delicious coffee in the bistro car.

On the drive to Zermatt, we had a pleasant conversation with some Japanese tourists. After arriving in Zermatt, we saved ourselves the ticket (CHF 132) for the Gornergrat Railway, as the clouds cleared just in time and the Matterhorn revealed itself in all its majesty from the village.
After a quick stop at Lindt for chocolate ice cream, we rested in the church square. Our stroll through the lively village streets, past traditional wooden chalets and monuments to the pioneers of mountaineering, offered ever-changing perspectives of the world-famous peak.

For the return journey, we took the scenic Glacier Express route to Andermatt. Instead of paying the expensive reservation fee for the panoramic train, we opted for the smart alternative of changing to regional connections, which were fully covered by the day ticket.

If you’re looking for a reliable and dedicated travel companion for your next trips to Switzerland, I’d be happy to hear from you here on Friends.guide. I might be able to get you a day ticket and help you plan your itinerary. Traveling from the Swiss Plateau is quite convenient if you start early.
